Thisvolumebringstogetherthelatestdiachronicresearchonsyntacticfeaturesandtheirroleinrestrictingsyntacticchange.Thechaptersaddressacentraltheoreticalissueindiachronicsyntax:whethersyntacticvariationcanalwaysbeattributedtodifferencesinthefeaturesofitemsinthelexicon,astheBorer-Chomskyconjectureproposes.Inansweringthisquestion,allthechaptersdevelopanalysesofsyntacticchangecouchedwithinaformalistframeworkinwhichrichhierarchicalstructuresandabstractfeaturesofvariouskindsplayanimportantrole.Thefirstthreepartsofthevolumeexplorethedifferentdomainsoftheclause,namelytheC-domain,theT-domainandthe?P/VP-domainrespectively,whilechaptersinthefinalpartareconcernedwithestablishingmethodologyindiachronicsyntaxandmodellinglinguisticcorrespondences.Thecontributorsdrawonextensivedatafromalargenumberoflanguagesanddialects,includingseveralthathavereceivedlittleattentionintheliteratureondiachronicsyntax,suchasRomeyka,aGreekvarietyspokeninTurkey,andMiddleLowGerman,previouslyspokeninnorthernGermany.Otherlanguagesareexploredfromafreshtheoreticalperspective,includingHungarian,Icelandic,andAustronesianlanguages.Thevolumeshedslightnotonlyonspecificsyntacticchangesfromacross-linguisticperspectivebutalsoonbroaderissuesinlanguagechangeandlinguistictheory.
